Ask anyone who knew me, what I was like as a little girl, they will tell you that I loved to read. Whether it was the magazine that came free with the Sunday newspaper, my mothers huge series of encyclopaedias or my own pile of children’s books- of which I literally had hundreds- I couldn’t get enough of reading. I was nicknamed Becky Bookworm by my family. As a single mum herself, my mother couldn’t afford to spoil us, but when she did take us to the toyshop to choose a treat, I’d head straight to the book section. She took us to the various towns surrounding our little village to join their libraries, my perfect day out!
It was my mum that introduced me to an author that was like no other… Enid Blyton. I was an avid fan of the Famous Five and the Secret Seven series, but I also loved her many tales of fairies, elves and imps. Allowing myself to be drawn into a magical secret world where anything could happen, I imagined my garden was filled with the characters I met in my books. I wished and wished that I’d meet one and go on the most magical adventure ever.
Of course, this never happened and as the years passed, I naturally outgrew my favourite books, but I never forgot about them. When I found out I was expecting my little girl 5 years ago, I was filled with excitement that I’d be able to share my old favourites with her, and my massive imagination. Cici, my daughter, is now 4 years old, and finally at the age where she believes in magic and fairy dust!
Recently, I was offered the chance to review some items by Fairy Doorz and I jumped at the chance! For Christmas, I’d bought Cici a book about fairies, which we hadn’t read yet, we were waiting for the perfect time. This was now the perfect time!
Fairy Doorz is a small, family owned business based in Wales, who handcraft beautiful fairy doors, as well as providing lots of exciting accessories to purchase to make your fairies feel welcome and more at home, and not forgetting the all important magic fairy dust of course!
Our package arrived and I opened it excitedly, like a child at Christmas. Inside, I found two parcels wrapped in colourful tissue paper. The first contained a cute little fairy door, along with a bottle of magic fairy dust, and the second, some fairy door accessories and… our very own fairy! Cici was currently at school… and I was in my element! My childhood dreams could now come true, lived through my little girl!
I pulled out the fairy door from its box and instantly fell in love. It was pink, our favourite colour, and I noticed it had been personalised with Cici’s name. I’m a sucker for the personal touch. The door felt sturdy, and I knew it would last a long time. It had a hinge attached to it, meaning the door could be opened or closed. The package also contained a fairyland themed cardboard cut out, which attaches easily to the back of the door (sticky pads supplied), allowing the door to be opened with an amazing view into fairyland.
Opening the box of fairy door accessories, I pulled out 2 hand painted toadstools and a little door plaque to hang onto the door nob… again, both made to last. It also contained a tiny door mat, for our fairy to welcome her friends into her home.
Our fairy was no bigger than my little finger, but just as solidly made as the other items. She had long golden hair just like Cici’s, was wearing a shimmery tutu and pair of wings and holding a tiny star shaped wand.
That night at bedtime, Cici and I read our fairy book, before we said our good nights. I set the fairy door up on my mantelpiece and went to bed myself, excited to see her face in the morning. The door will eventually be moved into Cici’s bedroom once I’ve finished redecorating it.
The next morning, Cici spotted her door right away and loved it! She quickly caught her fairy before she could fly away and I taught her how to hold her without hurting her. Our fairy door has been a part of our home now for just over a week and Cici has enjoyed playing with her little set.
If you’re looking for something a little different that will encourage your childs (and your own!) imagination and role play development, I’d recommend these products hands down. Cici enjoys making up little stories and I’m able to leave little gifts for her from her fairy. At just £14.95 per door, it won’t break the bank, and the quality and hours of fun are well worth it, in my opinion. They supply a wide range of designs, catering for all tastes. They even sell superhero doors! How amazing is that!
