The Christmas Tag 2016

I love Christmas, so being tagged in a Christmas themed Q&A post by fellow blogger Amy over at Amy & Tots has given me the perfect opportunity to talk about my Christmas favourites! Read on to find out more…

What’s your favourite Christmas Movie?
My favourite Christmas movie has got to be Home Alone. A timeless classic that takes me back to my childhood. I now watch it with my 4 year old daughter Cici who laughs her head off alongside me. Cici’s current favourite Christmas movie is The Grinch.

Have you ever had a white Christmas?
I will be honest, I’m not entirely sure. I remember a time when I was around 11 years, we were living on a farm in the mountains. It snowed so bad we couldn’t leave the house for about a week (or so it seemed at the time). What with us being so high up, it took a while to melt. My sister and I spent our days sledging down the many hills. I’m unsure whether it was at Christmas though, it could well have just seemed that way because we obviously couldn’t get to school and it looked so picturesque… I’ll have to double check with my Mum on this one!

Where do you usually spend your holiday?
I have the same routine every year, but I love it and it would feel strange if it were ever to change. Christmas morning, Cici and I open our stockings in my bed. My Mum will nip over to watch Cici open her main presents and then we usually have dinner in my Mums. This year however, my sister is cooking. After dinner, Cici and I will go home to chill out and play with her toys before we spend Christmas evening at my Auntie’s house with the rest of the family. Christmas for me is all about being lazy and doing absolutely nothing!

What is your favourite Christmas song?
My favourite Christmas song is Driving Home For Christmas by Chris Rea. It’s such a feel good song, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside (cheesy I know…). Always gets me in the Christmassy mood.

Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?
Cici and I do the popular Christmas Eve box containing new pyjamas, Christmas socks, a Christmas themed storybook, a Santa key etc. I know, I know…you’re probably rolling your eyes at the thought, but it actually follows on from a tradition I had with my younger siblings when they were little, where I’d buy them a little something to open on Christmas Eve, such as a chocolate lollypop, just to keep them from under my Mum’s feet for a bit. I wanted to continue this tradition after I became a Mum, as my siblings were older then, and I wanted to spoil my child like I enjoyed spoiling my siblings.

Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?
Oh gosh, here goes… Trying to remember the famous Christmas poem Twas The Night Before Christmas where Santa’s reindeer are all named. Ummmm… Rudolph, Dasher, Prancer, Doner, Comet, Cupid… that’s six… there’s eight including Rudolph isn’t there? Is Cupid even one? I’m not very good at this game… (Runs off to Google it…)

Is your Christmas tree real or fake?
It’s fake. But I love it so much. I bought it 4 years ago at a bargain price and it’s covered in fake snow. I love having it up, although it’s hard work to hoover up the white ‘snowflakes’ every day when you have a black carpet!

What is your all time favourite holiday treat/food/sweet?
Pigs in blankets without a shadow of a doubt. For those who have never heard of pigs in blankets, they’re just cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon, pretty basic huh? But they MAKE christmas! I also treat myself to a bottle of mulled wine (or many!) every Christmas. It has to be this particular brand from Tesco, and it has to go in the fridge to chill first, I can’t abide warm wine, yeuch!

Be honest, do you like giving or receiving gifts better?
I’m not going to lie, I do love a thoughtful, unexpected gift, but I LOVE watching others open their gifts, especially now I’m a Mum. Unfortunately, Cici isn’t a big fan of unwrapping her presents yet. She always wants to play with each toy first before moving on to the next, which is so lovely of her… “But hello, impatient Mummy here, I want to see your reaction first before you go off to play!” I get way too excited on Christmas Day as you can probably tell! Let’s move on swiftly shall we?

What is the best Christmas present you’ve ever received?
This is going to sound really bad, but I honestly can’t think of anything right now, apart from the first mobile phone I ever received aged 14 years old! How shallow does that sound?! I think I’m going to have to sleep on this question and get back to you later with an update…

What would be your dream place to visit during the holiday season?
New York! I suspect this has been heavily influenced by various festive movies such as Christmas on 34th Street and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, but that would be my all time dream destination regardless of the season!

Are you a Pro present wrapper or do you fail miserably?
Square or rectangle shaped gifts, I have no problems at all. Any other shape, I’ve got no chance! Just smother it in sellotape, hope it all sticks and shove it at the back of the pile somewhere so nobody can see I’m not always perfect is my motto!

Most memorable Christmas moment?
One year, I bought my grandmother a gift set containing various potions and lotions to use at bath time. I also purchased a cupcake soap, complete with soapy icing on top. On opening her gift, she noticed that the ‘icing’ had started to melt and run slightly, scooped it up with her finger and licked it off before I could shout “No, don’t eat it, it’s soap!” She’s not lived it down since!

What made you realise the truth about Santa?
I was around 9 years old when I found a load of toys hidden in my Mum’s wardrobe. I couldn’t work out who else my Mum would be stashing toys for, so I quickly memorised some of the toys I’d seen to see if either my sister or I received them on Christmas Day. Turns out, surprise surprise, we did! I kept schtum though until the following Christmas when I blurted out that I knew Santa wasn’t real. I had to continue keeping it a secret that year though for my sister’s sake, although I struggled.

What makes the holidays special for you?
I try to book a fortnight off work to coincide with Cici’s school holidays, so for me it’s all about relaxing, having a lazy couple of weeks and just spending time with Cici, munching, watching films and doing absolutely nothing!

So there you have it. A little insight into the festive world of Cici and I. I’d love to hear about what you get up to during the holidays, do you have similar traditions to us, or are you totally different?

Following on in Amy’s footsteps, I too have tagged a few bloggers to complete the Q&A’s on their own blogs. Pop on over to see how they celebrate Christmas…
