My KonMari Mission: Making a Change

So here we are, on the second week of the year already, can you believe it? Life has already started to get back to normal and Christmas feels like a distant memory. I pulled my Christmas decorations down last week although I’ve been so busy getting back into the swing of work and school runs that I still haven’t had the chance yet to reorganise the house and put it back to how it was before the holidays!

According to a survey conducted by Festive Lights, a whopping 44% of people in the UK stick to tradition and take their decorations down on the 6th January. Mine came down on the 3rd this year, the day before I went back to work, putting me in the 14% of the population who choose an ‘other’ date than those listed. I usually pull them down before New Years Eve though, sick of the clutter. However, this Christmas was such a good one, I just didn’t want it to end!

Where do you place on the survey? How many of you pull them down after the 6th? I’m not normally a superstitious person, but for some reason, I can never bring myself to leave them up past that date. I think it’s the thought of it being a brand new year with 12 months to go until the next, so I’d prefer not to jinx myself from the word ‘go’.

Packing Away The Christmas Decorations

This week, I’m on a mission to get cracking on one of my main goals for 2017 – to declutter my home. When I moved into my current abode 4 years ago, I had to practically start from scratch. Family and friends kindly donated items they no longer needed or wanted, which I’ll forever be grateful for. I’d also see things while out shopping and buy them without asking myself if they were really necessary. Pretty soon, my home became depressingly cluttered, and I lost sight of how I wanted my home to look.

Last year, I started following the KonMari organisation method after seeing people rave about it on Facebook. I purchased the book ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying’ by Marie Kondo and it spurred me into action. As well as providing an easy to follow decluttering method, the book also explores why we struggle to keep our homes free of stuff. I think in my case, it’s a combination of not wanting to throw anything away incase I need it in future, or because I’d spent my hard earned cash to buy them. I also didn’t want to get rid of anything I’d been gifted incase I offended anyone. Reading the book made me realise something: I was keeping items that were making me unhappy in order to keep other people happy, people who rarely visit my home!

I began enthusiastically following the method in the book. Instead of asking you to declutter each room one at a time, which is what’s usually recommended by other ‘experts’, the KonMari method suggests decluttering item by item. Simply gather every single ‘like’ item in the house and ask yourself if each makes you happy. If it does, keep it! And if it doesn’t, then thank it and discard it.

Thank it? Yes you did read that right! Marie Kondo recommends thanking each and every item you get rid of. An old favourite dress that no longer fits? Thank it for all the good memories, then get rid. A birthday card you received? Thank it for making you feel loved and then discard it. I will admit that I stopped short at thanking my items. My life is already crazy enough without me talking to inanimate objects. I kinda understand what she’s getting at, it’s just not for me.

My first step was to tackle clothes, followed by papers, books, miscellaneous items and then finally, sentimental items. I’d started off well but by the time I arrived at the miscellaneous section, I was called on to start my insulin pump therapy training and my mission was abruptly aborted. This year, I’m starting again from scratch and I’m determined to complete each section! By the time I finish, there’ll be a place for everything and everything in it’s place… well that’s the plan anyway!

Over the next few weeks (or months, depending how quickly I work), I’m going to record my KonMari journey right here on my blog, complete with photos (oh the embarrassment!). By journalling it, I’m hoping it will give me a reason not to quit and to spur me on. I’m looking forward to seeing what random items I come across. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever found while having a clear out? I’m going to start right at the very beginning of the book, with clothes as my first item. I managed to get rid of 3 black bin bags last year (seriously, how many handbags does a girl need!), so this time around I’m hoping there won’t be as much to get rid of.

    I’m also in the 14% of the population then, think my decorations also came down on the 3rd.
    I seem to always be clearing and decluttering; I seem to struggle getting rid of some things and end up just moving them to another hiding place ‘just in case’ they ever come in useful. I’ll join you in the decluttering mission and giving thanks to each item (a really good idea actually)! x

    I have tried the Kon Mari method, but only one my clothes so far and I am obsessed with it. Will do it with the rest of the house but haven’t yet had time as doing my clothes took an entire weekend! The change it has made is already amazing, I am obsessed with putting things back in their place and knowing where everything is has made it so much easier to get dressed in the morning. I mean I always thought I knew where everything was, but being able to see it means I am not just resorting to wearing the same old few things time and time again.

    I haven’t decided whether or not to buy the book yet – seems like it’s a waste of money to buy something and then get rid of it?! Oh and I have to admit I did thank my items as they went into the charity bag (I filled 7 charity bags in total)

      I do recommend buying the book as its really encouraging and gives you some ‘get up and go’. But I bought the kindle version to avoid extra clutter 😉 It’s taken me more than a few days to get through the clothes (post to follow very soon) but I love how organised my wardrobes are now. Paper is my next mission 😊
